Teufelsschlucht - trolls nest

23 jun
2021

The Devil's Gorge or Teufelsschlucht is located on the eastern edge of the Ferschweiler Plateau within the South Eifel Nature Park in the vicinity of Irrel. It was formed towards the end of the last ice age, about 10,000 years ago as the result of one or more rock collapses. The cause of this event was probably a combination of the geological and climatic circumstances. The heavily fissured, more or less porous, rock strata of the so-called Luxembourg Sandstone (geologically part of the Lower Jurassic or German Lias) are laid over keuper beds that tend towards being impervious. As weathering progresses, the structure becomes unstable as a result of the undercutting of the sandstone base. Towards the end of the last glaciation period this undercutting, in combination with extensive frost shattering, reached the point where it caused the aforementioned rock collapse.

2021

Vianden Castle (Luxembourgish: Veianer Schlass [ˈfɑɪɑnɐ ˈʃlɑs] or (locally) Veiner Schlooss [ˈfɑɪnɐ ˈʃloːs]), located in Vianden in the north of Luxembourg, is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine. With origins dating from the 10th century, the castle was built in the Romanesque style from the 11th to 14th centuries. Gothic transformations and trimmings were added at the end of this period. A Renaissance mansion was added in the 17th century but thereafter the castle was allowed to fall into ruins. It has, however, recently been fully restored and is open to visitors.

Hike around Rosport

02 may
2021

Rosport is a town located 10 km from Echternach, halfway along the river Sauer to Grevenmacher. Rosport is famous in Luxembourg for its water intake and mineral water bottling plant. The most expensive mineral water in the principality is the water drawn in this place. Rosport is located in the valley of the Sauer River, which was dammed in this town. The blue autopedestre trail leads through the surrounding hills. Lots of beautiful views, a large elevation gain (265 meters), a reasonable length (about 11 km) and the Mariä Himmelfahrt (Girsterklause) chapel make this trail a great treat for hiking fans.

Irrel Waterfalls on the Prüm River - located 5 km east of the Luxembourg border. A panoramic place with a beautiful gorge and a covered bridge towering over it. Nearby is the ruin of Prumerburg Castle. Another interesting piece is one of the three remaining bunkers of the Westwall - Katzenkopf in Irrell (you need to contact the local firefighters by phone to see the museum, visiting possible on Saturday or Sunday). If you decide to go to around Irrel (the waterfall, the castle, the bunker) loop is about 10km long.

Hiking around the lake in Echternach

24 mar
2021

If you are going to the lake in Echternach and you want to avoid the crowds while walking (Luxembourg has only 1% of the country's surface with standing water - lakes are not a typical feature of the landscape) I recommend the autopedestre number 2 walking trail around Lake Echternach. The trail is beautiful, scenic, with quite gentle slopes (the descent is more difficult than the entrance) and mostly paved. The reward for climbing over one hundred meters is a wonderful view of the lake and the southern part of the town.
